Biography
Doug McGaughey retired from the Department of Religious Studies in 2015 after 27 years of teaching. He lives with his wife, Margit, in Tübingen, Germany. He has the incredible fortune of a rich family life and the continuance of his research and writing. His current project, a two-volume work (forthcoming from Olms Verlag, Baden Baden, 2024) on David Friedrich Strauß, Tübingen theologian and cause of a political revolution in the Canton of Zürich in 1839, calls for a re-appraisal and retrieval of Strauß’ work in biblical criticism, an engagement of his metaphysical oddysey, which led him to materialistic reductionism, as wall as provides a critique, not mere criticism, of the enduring influence down to today of the distorted reading of Immanuel Kant, which Strauß received from his mentors, Hegel, Schleiermacher, and F.C. Baur.
